**SENIORS:  FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Assistance) is now open.  This is the only application for TOPS, grants, loans, parent loans and work study for financial assistance for college and technical school for the 2017-18 academic year.  Get your FAFSA filled out as soon as possible.  www.fafsa.gov 

Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship for female students planning to major in the medical, nursing or allied health fields.  Must be planning to attend one of the following Louisiana schools:  Centenary, Dillard University, Louisiana College,

LSU Alexandria, LSU Eunice, Louisiana Tech, or Loyola University New Orleans.  Must contact school for application process.

Orent Law Military Scholarship:  $2000; must be a senior with a biological or step-parent who has served (previous or actively) in the military.  500+ word essay answering the following prompt:   How has your parent’s service shaped your life growing up, and how has it affected your goals and dreams, looking ahead?  Submission requirements:

  • First and last name, email address, & phone number listed at the beginning of your essay
  • Parent’s full name, rank, and military branch listed at the beginning of your essay
  • 500+ word essay, answering the prompt
  • A copy of participant’s transcript of any form of attendance verification from a high school, US college, or US university.
  • Email your completed application to scholarship@orentlaw.com.

 

AXA Achievement Scholarship:  Students that are active in the community, have led a project that benefits others, or have overcome personal challenges should apply for this scholarship.  The first 10,000 applications will be considered.  Apply online at www.axa-achievement.com.  Deadline:  December 15, 2016.

 

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund scholarly writing contest for grades K-12.  The theme for the essay is “What Does the Second Amendment Mean to You?”  Deadline:  December 31, 2016.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program:  Approximately 20---$10,000 scholarships will be awarded; Apply online at reganfoundation.org/scholarships.  Deadline:  January 5, 2017 or when the first 25,000 have applied.

Candidates must:

  • demonstrate at school, at the workplace, and within the community the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship;
  • demonstrate strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 grade point average/4.0 scale or equivalent);
  • be citizens of the United States of America;
  • be high school seniors attending high school in the United States, or any of the U.S. territories and commonwealths and graduating in winter 2016 or spring 2017.  Applicants living on a U.S. Armed Forces base and attending high school outside the U.S. are eligible.  Home-schooled students who are graduating in winter 2016 or spring 2017 are also eligible.
  • plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States for the entire 2017-2018 academic year.

 

AFL-CIO Scholarship:  3--$1000 scholarships will be awarded.  This scholarship is open to all seniors whose parent/step-parent is a member of an affiliated local union in good standing with the Louisiana AFL-CIO.  An essay is required for consideration:  “Beyond Wages:  The Positive Impact of Organized Labor on the Workplace.”  See Mrs. Greene for contest rules, and essay specifications.  Deadline:  January 13, 2017. 

**Louisiana Solid Waste Association Scholarship:  all applications must be accompanied by:  three letters of recommendation, an official high school transcript and an essay of 150-200 words that includes information about yourself, educational goals and professional aspirations.  Deadline:  January 27, 2017. $1000

Grades 9-12:  Beauregard Electric Rural Electric Youth Tour-Washington, DC June 9-16, 2017.  Essay contest:  Students must write an essay (max 1000 words) entitled, “What is the biggest issue facing your generation and how can we address that issue?”  See your English teacher for more information.

** Queen of Pink Scholarship: $250; SBHS will choose one boy and one girl.  Must have a 2.5GPA, attend a Louisiana college/university, know someone who has or has had Breast Cancer or some type of Cancer, and you must share your affiliation with that person.  Deadline:  February 1, 2017.

Farm Bureau Scholarship:  must be attending an accredited Louisiana college/university, pursue a curriculum in agriculture, vocational ag, agribusiness, or other curriculum directly benefitting the agricultural sector and be a current Farm Bureau member.  Beauregard parish level is $1000; Louisiana state level is $2000, and is currently renamed The Linda and Wayne Zaunbrecher Scholarship, and can be renewed annually for a total of $8000. 

Deadline:  February 15, 2017.

Boardwalk Pipeline Scholarship:  $1000; SBHS will be awarded at least one of these scholarships due to the pipeline being so close to our school.  Apply online at

The Louisiana Middle School Association Scholarship:  will award a $1000.00 scholarship to high school seniors entering the field of education.  Must write a 300-500 word essay explaining why you want to become a teacher.  Deadline:  March 15, 2017.

The Heart of America Foundation’s Christopher Reeve Service Award:  presented to an extraordinary youth who has demonstrated tremendous courage, compassion and caring in serving his or her community.  $1000; Deadline:  December 1, 2016.
